L'incredibile Storia Dei Faraoni - I segreti di un'antica civilta by Cristiana Barandoni

The incredible story of the Pharaohs
The secrets of an ancient civilization

by

Cristiana Barandoni

Another Italian book cover this week by the author Cristiana Barandoni.

A super simplistic image of a Pharaoh taken while on holiday - NO - I never switch off.

Not much Photoshop just giving the appearance that the statue is gold and not sandstone.

Il Lato Oscuro Dell'addio by Michael Connelly

The Dark Side of farewell by Michael Connelly

A Italian book cover this week by the author Michael Connelly. I am happy the effort taken to capture this photograph hasn't gone unnoticed and is now a book cover!  This photograph was taken on the first morning in a 10 day excursion to New York - just before I nearly got arrested (for the 3rd time that morning and it wasn't even 8 am) !!!

NO - I shouldn't have been on the VERY BUSY underpass !!

Die Unbekannte Terroristin by Richard Flanagan

The unknown terrorist by Richard Flanagan

A German book cover this week by the author Richard Flanagan. I lot more "light" in feel than my usual photographs and some would say all the better for it. Many years ago I took a Dandelion Clock from my garden and photographed it in MANY different ways; even down to individual seed heads!! I then layered the single seed head images and blurred them in various amounts to give the impression of depth. I then added a very soft scratched overlay to give a little grit to the composite photograph.

Shakespear's Sword by Alan Judd

Shakespear's Sword by Alan Judd

Another UK book cover this week by the author Alan Judd. The original photograph of the antique Rapier Sword was taken as a "cut out" - on a plain white background. I often photograph props this way as it is much easier for the designer to then extract it and lay it on a background of their choice - as they have here to great affect.

Il Bambino Silenzioso by Sarah A. Denzil

The Silent Child by Sarah A. Denzil

Another Italian book cover this week - and as always in my usual "Dark Photography Style"

It is sad in many ways but my imagination has to have a dark undertone when creating photographs for thriller book covers and this is a classic example.

I purchased the child's tricycle from a yard sale many years ago with the sole purpose of using it in my stock photography images. I took it into the woods (with many unusual looks - as I don't have kids) and proceeded to create scenes that conjure up images of missing or "taken" children.

Like I say it isn't a job for everyone !!

L'amica Sbagliata by Cass Green

The Wrong Friend by Cass Green

An Italian book cover this week from an author whose books my photography has graced before (it is always nice to "get" more than one book cover for a given author).

Translated this book is called The Wrong Friend - (thanks, Google)

The photograph itself was taken in "not so sunny" Blackpool in the UK.

A great deal of photoshop was actually performed to get the look I was looking for this book cover but sadly the book cover designer has REALLY oversaturated the right-hand door for effect. This is often the case when creating book covers, I try to make a cover with realism and then items or effects are added or taken away at the layout stages. Many photographers are too precious about their work and get upset over this - me - it is just something I have leaned to live with.

This photograph was taken many years ago in an abandoned Lunatic Asylum in deepest darkest Wales.

An Evil Mind by Chris Carter

An Evil Mind by Chris Carter

I am really SO excited about this cover as it is by my favourite author Chris Carter !!!

It may not be the most exciting book cover - and the designer has added a room in the background (quite badly) ----- but is another notch on the bedpost of authors that my photographs have graced the covers of - which makes me VERY happy !!

la solitudine del ghiaccio by Sheena Kamal

the loneliness of the ice by Sheena Kamal

An Italian book cover this week by author Sheena Kamal. This photograph was taken while living in a car for 10 days on assignment trekking around Iceland --- hands down the most amazing place on the planet I have EVER been to !

Freezing cold (especially living in a car at well below sub zero temperatures) but worth every second to see such amazing landscapes gracing the cover of books.

Die Tote im Pfarrhaus by Ruth Rendell

Death in the Rectory by Ruth Rendell

A German cover this week by an author that needs NO introduction - the amazing Ruth Rendell.

Again a very simple image of a weather vein photographed in Cambridge, England while on assignment. A created this image as dark and moody and the designer has increased this highlighting the direction symbols for effect. Sadly the designer has then also added the pretty dated edge effect to the cover --- which is sadly out of my hands.

Nuit D'ete by Dan Simmons

Summer Night by Dan Simmons

Yet another French cover this week but by author Dan Simmons.

The actual cover itself is a composite image created by myself - in actual fact (yes yet again) the man IS me photographed in my Machester studio and later placed into the scene !!!

This image has actually been used before on another book cover which always suprises me.

I find it interesting how / why some images never sell and some sell multiple times within the same industry. Anyhow - the location of this image sadly is no more, which is a real shame as it was amazing. The location was actually an old asylum located in deepest darkest Wales in the UK - all the walls were intricately carved in Oak panelling but sadly the travelling community decided to strip it all bare (another piece of history gone forever).

Les Sept Stigmates by Jean Dardi

The Seven Stigmas by Jean Dardi

Another French cover this week by author Jean Dardi.

The actual cover itself is a composite image created by myself - in actual fact the man holding the bloody knife IS me photographed in my Machester studio !!!

The subway, however, has a slightly different story. This was photographed while on assignment in Prague. What you can't see (hidden behind my arm) is the drug dealing pimp walking towards me with one of his girls who was VERY worse for wear. It seems the pimp who was wearing tracksuit bottoms and a 1980's blouson leather jacket decided my camera was nice and shiny and he should keep it ---- however i had other ideas !!!

Lets say ---- I still own the camera and leave t at that ;)

Un Egyptien dans la ville by Steven Taylor

An Egyptian in the City by Steven Taylor

A French cover this week from Steven Taylor, Ph.D, born 1967, is a British author and lecturer in psychology who has written several books on psychology and spirituality. He is a senior lecturer in psychology at Leeds Beckett University.

The irony of this cover amuses me I have to say.

A Roman statue photographed in Las Vegas by a Brit for a Brit to depict a story about Egypt ---- how very cosmopolitan !!

SKAZA Zbigniew Zborowski

Destruction --- Zbigniew Zborowski

A Slovakian cover this week by Zbigniew Zborowski

I just love seeing my photographs on book covers from across the world - and this one is NO different !!

The actual photography was taken in my hometown of a broken garage window I drive past daily. After keep passing year after year I decided it was time to pull over and photograph it before it got repaired (which it never has).

I am now glad I made the effort as so often we ignore what is around us.

la nuova moglie by Jane Corry

The New Wife --- Jane Corry

An Italian cover this week by Jane Corry. The actual photograph was taken while on vacation in The Cotswolds in the UK in an old historic building. The original photograph was a little lifeless so I decided to add an ethereal glow in Photoshop to create a point of interest.

Simple but effective book cover design helps and allows the image to breath

Do not forget me --- Rick Mofina

Yet another German cover this week ---- one of my most popular locations that my work ends up. The image itself however was captured in Prague while on location shooting specifically for my stock photography. A very simple image with me adding the blood while back at the office in Photoshop ---- and then the book cover designer adding some more for good measure !!

Und Deine Zeit Verrinnt by Mary Higgins Clark

When your time is gone --- Mary Higgins Clarke

Another Mary Higgins Clark cover this week but this is from Germany.

The image that I created here in my studio in Manchester UK.

The hourglass was photographed full of sand taking care the highlights were placed exactly where I required them. Then using the same lighting setup I photographed a wine glass full of fake blood from different angles and also a "blood drip".

Thenit was a matter of "not so simply" compositing all the elements together.

Pojdz na sad bozy by Ziomecki Mariusz

Pojdz na sad bozy by Ziomecki Mariusz

WOW ---- according to Google this is a book from Madagascar (which if correct is a first for me). As for the translation ----- Google without a doubt got it wrong so, sorry I have no idea !!

What I can tell you about though is the photograph that adorns the book cover. I was in the North East of England on location assignment and a good friend of mine (also a photographer) called Alan Clarke asked if he could join me. The answer was an obvious "yes" but on the proviso he would model for me. So model he did --- he even brought an axe for good measure (to this day I have never actually asked why) !!

Depraved Heart by Patricia Cornwell

What can I say ..... when your photograph ends up as a book cover on a Patricia Cornwell novel you can't help but smile!

The photograph was taken while on assignment in Malta a number of years ago in a subway, the "speed lines" were added when I returned home in Photoshop.
