The Hypnotist

The Hypnotist

by

Lars Kepler

A reprint of a book i have been meaning to read since I first saw it on the bookshelf

The photograph for this book cover was taken in an old abandoned house in my home town that had been used as a toilet by people for years and years ! I often go into smelly places but this was the worst I have EVER come across - the smell was quite unbelievable !!!!

I added the figure, light source and textures later in my "less smelly" office in Photoshop !!

It may have been one of the worst locations EVER - BUT - I have many many covers from inside here so "every cloud has a silver lining" - i guess !

La settima lapide

The seventh plaque

by

Igor De Amicis

An Italian book cover this week by Igor De Amicis

As always - less is MORE when it comes to book cover photography!

A very simplistic picture of a prison cell door looking down at night casting shadows across the floor. I then toned the image to show a warm outside the cell and a cold nighttime feel was then added to the cells inner living space. It is these simple subliminal messages that help convey a story to the image.

The Wanderer by Michael Ridpath

The Wanderer

Another image from my trip to Iceland a few years ago!My trip to Iceland was a REAL gamble for many reasons - the main 2 being - I am NOT a landscape photographer and the trip (living in a car in sub zero degrees for 10 days) was VERY expensive !! Finally, the images are starting to filter through as sales which helps me justify going back to this AMAZING place !!

So back to the photograph; shot out the window of my hire car (which i lived in for 10 days ---- WOW it was cold)!

Why was it shot out of the window and not on a tripod ?

Quite simply the wind was gale force -- pretty much all of the time so it was the only option!!

Zgielk czasu by Julian Barnes

Zgielk czasu

by

Julian Barnes

A Polish book cover this week- Zgielk czasu - which if Google translate is to be believed means Time-Lapse.

As can be seen on the cover Julian Barnes is Laureat for The Man Booker Prize - pretty cool I have to say !

A really like this photograph - not my usual style but none the less it says something to me. The actual photograph of the vintage piano was taken while on assignment in Iceland.

Tamburlaine by Christopher Marlowe

ROYAL SHAKESPEARE COMPANY

Somthing a little different this week. A complete marketing solution for non-other than The Royal Shakspeare Company - a new play by Christopher Marlowe.

An image that was taken in Miami of red paint dripping down a wall that I noticed while sightseeing. It just goes to show that no matter where you are and what you are doing saleable photographs are there for their taking.

All the hidden truths

A rare UK cover this week. I won't lie I never thought this image of a dead daffodil in a graveyard would ever sell, i honestly didn't think it was good enough for a book cover. How wrong I was !!! I will be honest and say the designer has salvaged the image with quite simply BRILLIANT typography !!

I really really LOVE this cover !!

Another image from my trip to Iceland a few years ago, and another book cover for Lars Kepler! My trip to Iceland was a REAL gamble for many reasons - the main 2 being - I am NOT a landscape photographer and the trip (living in a car in sub zero degrees for 10 days) was VERY expensive !! Finally, the images are starting to filter through as sales which helps me justify going back to this AMAZING place !!

So back to the photograph. The designer has kept the "mood" of the image and then added boats, sea and then the figure ---- sometimes I wish the designers knew how to use Photoshop better though as the man is VERY badly done - sadly.

Sounds like a GREAT read though - think I might buy thsione !!

Training Testimonial

I always find it very humbling when i receive emails like the one below after my training sessions especially from such esteemed photographers such as Mr Phil Paine --- a man who has seen and done everything in our great industry

It lets me know I am doing things right !!

"I went for Photoshop Training for 2 days with Dave and had no idea what to expect.
I am still reeling from the amazing insights and the way Dave tailored the days to my specific needs and style.
This is a BIG learning curve and WILL change your workflow for the better.
If you want to learn how and why you do what you do then book a couple of 1 to 1 sessions and prepare to blow away the cobwebs and learn.
Fantastic trainer, top chap and Mildred is a cute cat, oh I bought a pen and tablet too, impossible not to after this.
Speak to Dave and tell him Phil sent you!
Thank you for the most interesting and rewarding 2 days I have spent for a long while"

Thanks Phil !!!

Cold Heart by Stephen Edger

Another UK book cover this week yet again by the author Stephen Edger (that is 2 in a month)

Again a really simple photograph from a place I used to visit regularly before it was sadly knocked down to make way for MORE new houses. It may have been dark wet and smelly but I have had SO MANY book covers from this location it must rank top of my list of used locations

Stories And Secrets

A French book cover this week that looks and feels like the book title I posted here 2 weeks ago - also a historical book but from Italy and about Egypt - whereas this is a French book about Italy ?!?!?!?

Another statue taken while on holiday and then made to look like it was made of Gold.

November by Jorge Galan

NOVEMBER

I am pleased this image has finally been chosen to grace the cover of a book. I took a liking to this gravestone (yes it is a gravestone) while on location in Malta a number of years ago while walking around the largest cemetery I have ever been to! I have a number of different versions of it as it really caught my eye. I was the one who added the texture and blood (obviously) and the designer has then added the landscape below to add to the narrative of the story itself - which is very common.

L'incredibile Storia Dei Faraoni - I segreti di un'antica civilta by Cristiana Barandoni

The incredible story of the Pharaohs
The secrets of an ancient civilization

by

Cristiana Barandoni

Another Italian book cover this week by the author Cristiana Barandoni.

A super simplistic image of a Pharaoh taken while on holiday - NO - I never switch off.

Not much Photoshop just giving the appearance that the statue is gold and not sandstone.

Il Lato Oscuro Dell'addio by Michael Connelly

The Dark Side of farewell by Michael Connelly

A Italian book cover this week by the author Michael Connelly. I am happy the effort taken to capture this photograph hasn't gone unnoticed and is now a book cover!  This photograph was taken on the first morning in a 10 day excursion to New York - just before I nearly got arrested (for the 3rd time that morning and it wasn't even 8 am) !!!

NO - I shouldn't have been on the VERY BUSY underpass !!

Die Unbekannte Terroristin by Richard Flanagan

The unknown terrorist by Richard Flanagan

A German book cover this week by the author Richard Flanagan. I lot more "light" in feel than my usual photographs and some would say all the better for it. Many years ago I took a Dandelion Clock from my garden and photographed it in MANY different ways; even down to individual seed heads!! I then layered the single seed head images and blurred them in various amounts to give the impression of depth. I then added a very soft scratched overlay to give a little grit to the composite photograph.

Shakespear's Sword by Alan Judd

Shakespear's Sword by Alan Judd

Another UK book cover this week by the author Alan Judd. The original photograph of the antique Rapier Sword was taken as a "cut out" - on a plain white background. I often photograph props this way as it is much easier for the designer to then extract it and lay it on a background of their choice - as they have here to great affect.

Il Bambino Silenzioso by Sarah A. Denzil

The Silent Child by Sarah A. Denzil

Another Italian book cover this week - and as always in my usual "Dark Photography Style"

It is sad in many ways but my imagination has to have a dark undertone when creating photographs for thriller book covers and this is a classic example.

I purchased the child's tricycle from a yard sale many years ago with the sole purpose of using it in my stock photography images. I took it into the woods (with many unusual looks - as I don't have kids) and proceeded to create scenes that conjure up images of missing or "taken" children.

Like I say it isn't a job for everyone !!

L'amica Sbagliata by Cass Green

The Wrong Friend by Cass Green

An Italian book cover this week from an author whose books my photography has graced before (it is always nice to "get" more than one book cover for a given author).

Translated this book is called The Wrong Friend - (thanks, Google)

The photograph itself was taken in "not so sunny" Blackpool in the UK.

A great deal of photoshop was actually performed to get the look I was looking for this book cover but sadly the book cover designer has REALLY oversaturated the right-hand door for effect. This is often the case when creating book covers, I try to make a cover with realism and then items or effects are added or taken away at the layout stages. Many photographers are too precious about their work and get upset over this - me - it is just something I have leaned to live with.
